Abstract

Objective: To verify the influence of the expansion screw activation protocol on the dental and skeletal effects induced by rapid maxillary expansion supported by mini-implants (MARPE). Method: a search strategy was carried out in databases (Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus), until February 2022. Prospective and retrospective studies were included, in which the influence of the expansion screw activation protocol on the effects of dental and skeletal injuries induced by MARPE. The risk of bias assessment was determined using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) Checklist. Results: Nine prospective and retrospective clinical studies met the eligibility criteria, in which they showed similar skeletal and dentoalveolar effects for slow or fast activation protocols. Conclusion: There was no difference in the dental and skeletal effects of MARPE in relation to screw opening speed in adult patients.
