Abstract

Objective: To synthesize and integrate the results of previous studies to provide a comprehensive overview of music therapy as a therapeutic nursing resource for elderly people with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Method: integrative literature review by searching the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, National Library of Medicine's – NLM/PUBMED e Scientific Electronic Library Online/SCIELO databases using the descriptors "Music Therapy", "Elderly", "Alzheimer's Disease". Randomized clinical trials and controlled studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish between 2013 and 2023 were included in the article, and incomplete texts, out-of-context works, reviews, abstracts and articles outside the proposed timeframe were excluded. Results: six publications were selected which addressed the effectiveness of music therapy in AD. These studies affirmed the significant impact of music therapy on patients with AD, such as reducing neuropsychiatric and behavioral symptoms. Conclusions: the effectiveness of music therapy in AD is proposed; however, further studies need to be carried out in order to have more comprehensive answers, due to the scarcity of articles on the subject.
