Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 is associated with coagulopathy due to the dysregulated activation of the immune and hemostatic systems. Objective: To compile information on blood coagulation changes associated with COVID-19. Method: A descriptive review was conducted by searching the PubMed database using the terms "blood coagulation," "fibrinolysis," and "laboratory tests," with a filter for clinical studies from 2019 to 2023. COVID-19-associated coagulopathy results from endothelial injury caused by the direct invasion of SARS-CoV-2, leading to microvascular inflammation and complement system activation. The elevation of markers such as fibrinogen and D-dimer reflected this hypercoagulability and correlated with the severity of the disease. Independent predictors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the intensive care unit (ICU) included advanced age, male gender, coronary disease, prior myocardial infarction, and elevated D-dimer. Conclusion: COVID-19 is associated with a high incidence of thrombotic complications. The data highlight key parameters that correlated with the severity of COVID-19.
