The use of laser therapy in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity: an integrative review of the literature

Abstract

Objective: To understand the effectiveness of using laser therapy in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review based on the analysis of articles published in the Pubmed and CAPES Periodicals databases, using the descriptors “photobiomodulation therapy”; “dentin hypersensitivity” and its synonyms recognized by the Mesh and Decs vocabularies. Studies published in article format were included, without limitation on the year of publication, written in English and Portuguese and that answered the guiding question of the review. Results: 35 articles were found, of which 33 were pre-selected and 6 included in this literature review. All six groups, after the dentin hypersensitivity sessions, were significantly reduced, 50% were low intensity and 50% were high intensity, therefore, there was no further use of laser in our selection basis. Conclusion: Laser therapy is highly effective due to its pain control mechanism and long-term duration, showing itself to be very promising for the treatment of HD, however there is a need for more studies to develop a reference protocol for the treatment of HD. treatment of this condition.
