Rapid Maxillary Expansion (ERM) consists of the mechanical opening of the median palatal suture, inducing new bone formation and providing a widening of the maxilla in the transverse direction. ERM has been routinely used in orthodontic practice to correct posterior crossbites and increase the arch perimeter to correct dental crowding. Therefore, for a long time, ERM was indicated exclusively for growing individuals, considering that this group of patients has an incomplete stage of mineralization of the midpalatal suture. In this context, the objective of the study was to classify the stages of mineralization of the median palatal suture in adult patients (18 to 30 years old), using cone beam computed tomography and determine the frequency of occurrence of the maturational stages, seeking to correlate these with age. patient chronology and clinical applicability. To evaluate the median palatal suture, 76 computed tomography scans were used, which were classified according to the maturation stages proposed by Angelieri. After the application of the .8% in the 18 to 21 age group and only 1.2% in the 26 to 30 age group. In stage C, there was an increase in the probability of occurrence with age, being 19.2% for those aged 18 to 21 years, and 32.1% for those aged 26 to 30 years. Stage D was the most common in all age groups. The stages that represented complete mineralization of the suture in the posterior region (stages D and E) reached a probability above 67% in all age groups.
