Abstract

Objective: To report an experience using an automated external defibrillator (AED) in public places. Methods: This is a descriptive study, of the experience report type, on the care of a cardiorespiratory arrest (CPA) performed in a public environment using an AED. Results: A 38-year-old man lost consciousness in a shopping mall in Teresina. The local fire brigade confirmed the CPA and began CPR maneuvers. Three shocks were administered interspersed with 2 minutes of CPR. Six minutes after the CPA, the Advanced Life Support Unit (USA) arrived at the scene and the patient was already conscious. Discussion: Early defibrillation, when performed within the first 3 to 5 minutes after CPA, can increase the survival rate by up to 75%. Conclusion: Implemeting AEDs in public environments increases patients’ chances of survival in CPA.
