Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical consequences and associated factors of untreated dental caries in schoolchildren from Teresina, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 1,204 schoolchildren aged 8 to 10 years. The guardians completed a socioeconomic and demographic questionnaire. Caries experience was assessed using the dmft/DMFT index, and the clinical consequences of untreated caries were measured using the pufa/PUFA index. Descriptive analysis and Poisson regression with robust variance (p<0.05) were performed. Results: The prevalence of schoolchildren with untreated dental caries was 24.9%. Female schoolchildren, older children, public school students, and those whose mothers had lower education levels showed a higher prevalence of clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of schoolchildren with untreated dental caries was high and associated with individual and contextual sociodemographic factors.
