Oral health profile of patients hospitalized in an intensive care unit:
a retrospective study

Introduction: Hospitalization and the resulting oral changes alter the balance of the oral microbiota. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the oral health profile of patients hospitalized in the ICU. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study using the medical records of patients admitted to the ICU from March 2022 to March 2023. The medical records of 349 patients were analyzed. Results: Females represented 50.4% of the sample, while males represented 49.6%. The patients' ages ranged from 18 to 98 years. Most patients (81.6%) presented some type of oral change, with foci of odontogenic infection (63.8%) being the most prevalent, followed by changes in the oral mucosa (21%), mainly traumatic ulcers. Conclusion: Thus, oral changes are prevalent in patients hospitalized in the ICU, reinforcing the importance of the dentist in the multidisciplinary team that assists these patients.
