Objective: To analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the most cited articles on oral health literacy (OHL). Methodology: A bibliometric search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) involving articles on OHL, without restriction of language or year of publication. After selecting 50 articles, the following data were extracted from each article in descending order of citation: article title, number of citations, authors, institution, country, journal title, keywords, year of publication, study design, theme, and OHL assessment instruments. The number of citations for each article in WoS All Databases, Scopus, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE/PubMed was retrieved for comparison. For statistical analysis, Poisson regression (α = 5%) was performed. Results: The 50 articles on OHL were cited 2,260 times, with a variation between 22 and 123 citations. Most articles were developed in Anglo-Saxon American countries (60%). The most frequent study designs were cross-sectional (84%) and associations between oral health literacy (OHC) and other variables (46%). The author Jessica Lee was the most cited (32 articles; 853 citations). The most frequently used instrument to assess OHC was the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (REALD-30) (44%). Studies published between 2005 and 2014 (RR=1.34; 95% CI=1.02–1.77) showed the highest citation rate in WoS-CC. Conclusion: The 50 most cited articles on OHC were mainly published in the United States, with a cross-sectional design, focusing on the analysis of the association between OHC and other variables in the individual, and the most frequently used instrument was the REALD-30.
