Abstract

Introduction: Conventional irrigating solutions used in endodontics, such as sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine, have limitations such as tissue toxicity and limited efficacy in eliminating bacterial biofilms. Faced with this challenge, nanotechnology emerges as a promising strategy to enhance root canal disinfection. Objective: To present evidence on the use of nanoparticles in nanostructured systems with antimicrobial properties in endodontic irrigation. Methodology: This is an integrative review. The Medline, LILACS, SciELO, and PubMed databases were used. Original articles (2018–2025), in Portuguese and English, available in full, were included. Reviews, duplicates, and out-of-scope studies were excluded. Results: Of the 316 studies identified, 12 met the criteria. Most reported significant antimicrobial action, especially against Enterococcus faecalis, with emphasis on silver nanoparticles, iron oxide, and propolis. Conclusion: Nanoparticles demonstrated efficacy in intracanal disinfection, with lower toxicity and potential for clinical application, although further studies are needed.
