Efeito da dieta no desenvolvimento da cárie dentária da infância à adolescência: estudo longitudinal prospectivo

Resumo

Objetivo: Este estudo prospectivo avaliou a relação entre dieta e cárie em adolescentes com alta ingestão de açúcar na infância. Métodos: Examinou-se 220 crianças para avaliar cárie dentária. Pais responderam questionários de Frequência de Consumo Alimentar e saúde bucal e alimentos consumidos no lanche escolar foram registrados. Após 10 anos, foram reavaliados com os mesmos critérios. Verificaram-se os determinantes da experiência de cárie nos dois exames. Resultados: 176 adolescentes foram reexaminados (80%). Consumo de açúcar extrínseco no domicílio e frequência de escovação foram semelhantes nas duas fases. Na segunda, houve aumento na frequência de consumo de açúcares (p < 0,001). As lesões de cárie aumentaram, predominando baixa severidade. Vinte por cento das crianças livres de cárie na dentição decídua desenvolveram a doença na adolescência (p=0,012). Conclusão: Quanto maior o consumo de alimentos contendo açúcar e menor o tempo da última consulta ao dentista, maior a experiência de cárie em adolescentes.
