Abstract

Objectives: The present study aims to verify the influence of rapid maxillary expansion in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children, as well as the stability of its long-term effects. Methodology: A data search was carried out in electronic databases (Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus), until April 2019. Results: In general, MRE contributed to a significant improvement in the signs and symptoms of OSAS in children, but In some cases, a multidisciplinary approach was necessary for complete remission of symptoms. Conclusion: the degree of improvement in the signs and symptoms of OSAS resulting from ERM appears to be related to the level of the initial apnea and hypopnea index, and this procedure showed long-term stability, especially when the intervention is performed as early as possible and other factors obstructions are not present.
