Abstract

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland, commonly transmitted during milking, which causes changes in milk and mammary tissue, resulting in significant economic losses. These losses include costs for medications, milk disposal, reduced production, and, in some cases, the culling of animals. Due to the excessive use of antibiotics and the rise of multi-resistant bacteria, it is crucial to seek effective alternative therapies without relying on high doses of antimicrobials. In this context, the efficacy of ozonized sunflower oil was evaluated at concentrations of 922 mEq, 490 mEq, and natural oil, using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) methods against bacterial isolates of Klebsiella sp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus sp., and Streptococcus uberis, originating from mastitis cases diagnosed at the Microbiology Laboratory of Unoesc, Xanxerê Campus. The results showed that ozonized oil exhibited inhibitory activity against all tested bacteria at concentrations of 922 mEq and 490 mEq. The MIC values ranged from 0.025% to 13.1% for the 922 mEq oil and from 0.025% to 6.55% for the 490 mEq oil. These results highlight the potential of ozonized oil as a supportive therapy in the treatment of mastitis, contributing to reducing the use of antimicrobials, lowering treatment costs, mitigating bacterial resistance, and increasing the productive lifespan of animals, promoting significant benefits for animal health and sustainability in dairy farming.
